Irish bank AIB has raised its outlook for lending, deposits and net interest income after reporting growth in its loan book. The update offers an unusually upbeat picture of credit activity while European borrowers face high financing costs.

AIB said gross loans rose 5.6% to €76.3 billion. Lending to Irish small and medium-sized enterprises also increased, suggesting that some businesses remain willing to invest or finance operations despite a more demanding rate environment.

Higher loan balances can support interest income, but they do not by themselves establish stronger long-term profitability. Funding costs, deposit competition and future repayment performance remain important measures of whether loan growth translates into sustainable returns.

For Ireland, bank lending offers a window into the underlying domestic economy; for European lenders, AIB’s revised guidance presents a contrast with weaker credit markets elsewhere. Its trading update was published early on 4 November, so the figures are a supplementary development rather than breaking news on 5 November.
